Introduction to the Transit Trip Planner

The Transit Trip Planner allows you to search for the best public transportation connections between your origin and destination. The Transit Trip Planner is based on fixed-route public transportation services operating in the central Florida region that are provided by LYNX. The Transit Trip Planner can plan your trip on a door-to-door basis, providing walking directions from your origin to each and every transit stop and to your final destination. Any intermediate walking directions needed to transfer from one transit vehicle stop to another are also provided

Using the Transit Trip Planner to plan your trip is intended to help users make informed choices about transportation options. You only need to tell the Transit Trip Planner the origin and destination of your trip, as well as the time and date you wish to travel. The Transit Trip Planner automatically calculates possible transfers between routes and will suggest the most favorable connections available at the specified time.

The search results provided by the service are suggestions, which should be helpful with the planning of your trip. All generated itineraries are based on estimated travel times, which may be affected by weather, traffic conditions or other disturbances in the transportation system. LYNX is in no way liable for any harm caused by possibly unsuccessful transport connections suggested by the Transit Trip Planner.

You can customize your trips and save your own favorite locations and itineraries for future reference.

The use of the Transit Trip Planner web-based service is provided free of charge by LYNX.

Advanced Options

Clicking the link Advanced Options will open additional selections and settings below the basic search form. With these settings you can enhance the search to match your preferences.

Mid-Trip Stop and Time at mid-trip stop

You can enter a Mid-Trip Stop location similar to the origin and destination entries. This location will be a stop in the route suggestion. The Time at mid-trip stop is the period before the trip will continue from the mid-trip stop location to the destination.
Mid Trip Stop Criteria
Walking speed can be set to any of the following levels:
  • Slow - 100 feet per minute
  • Average - 230 feet per minute
  • Fast - 330 feet per minute
  • Running - 650 feet per minute
  • Cycling - 950 feet per minute
The Average speed of 230 feet/min is commonly used for walking in urban traffic conditions.
Walking Speed Criteria
Max walk distance defines the preferred maximum walking distance for a trip. A trip that has more than the selected maximum walking distance will be displayed in red on the itinerary. Walking Distance Criteria
The method used by the Transit Trip Planner to identify the best trips can be set in the Itinerary Optimization drop down list to be any of the following profiles:
  • Basic: based on real passenger behavior regarding walking and transfers

  • Fastest route: will minimize travel time

  • Minimize transfers: will use as few transfers a possible

  • Minimize walking: will minimize the total walking distance included in the route
Itinerary Option Criteria
The Transfer margin is the required difference between the arrival and next departure at a stop while transferring from one route to another. The default margin is set to 3 minutes. If the estimated arrival time is 8:30 AM, it is possible to transfer to a vehicle departing from the same stop at 8:33 AM or later. Reducing the default margin can allow faster possible connections, but the reliability of the suggested transfers will also be reduced and the connection may not be successful in practice. Increasing the margin will produce slower but more reliable connections. Some transfer points have a fixed margin that will override the user setting. Transfer Safety Margin Criteria
Route Exclude/Include

With this option you can:
  • Exclude Routes: Forces the Transit Trip Planner to use other routes. You can use this to avoid specific routes.

  • Include Routes: Forces the Transit Trip Planner to plan itineraries using ONLY the routes selected. If you already know your preferred routes, you can use this feature to find alternative departure times for this itinerary. For example, if you were interested in an itinerary that used the 20 transferring to the 30, followed by a transfer to the 47 (20-30-11447, you would need to select each of these routes from the Include route selection drop down lists and proceed with the remainder of your search.

  • None: The Transit Trip Planner will use all routes within the system when planning the itinerary.
When you select a route to include or exclude, a new drop down list for further inclusions or exclusions appears. You can choose a maximum of 20 routes.
Route Include/Exclude Criteria
Number of results defines the number of itineraries to be returned by your search. The default is 3, but this can be also be set to either 1 or 5. Number of Results Criteria
